Use Silverstack's clip library for EDL conform
EDL files generally represent a timeline from editing systems such as Avid Media Composer and contain an clip list including timecode data and (optionally) reel and clip information.
You can use an EDL in the CMX 3600 format to consolidate clips from the Silverstack library in a new Bin. From there, you could then copy all required clips from the EDL into a separate hard drive for the post production process.
Use case#
As an example, we can assume that the editor used five clips. We now need to transfer those clips to a VFX facility. Instead of shipping several hard drives with all the source footage, or manually searching them though a huge folder structure, you can automatically collect the clips by using the EDL import feature in Silverstack.
Silverstack matches the timecode from the EDL with the source timecode of clips in the project library and creates a new bin with the matched clips. From there it’s easy to backup the clips to a single destination using the backup feature.
Step by step#
Here’s an example of a typical workflow with Avid Media Composer:
- Choose the timeline in AVID Media Composer.
- In the main menu, press Output > EDL. The Avid EDL Manager will open.
- Press the “Get Sequence” Button to load the timeline.
- Make sure that the EDL settings are CMX3600.
- In the main menu, select File > Save As… and export the file to your Desktop.
Silverstack part#
- Launch Silverstack (and select the respective project).
- Press the Import button and choose the “Edit Decision List (CMX3600 EDL)” option.
- Choose the .EDL file from your Desktop folder.
- Make sure that the correct frame rate setting for your project is selected. It must be the same as the clip metadata.
- After reviewing the match is correct, press Finish and Silverstack will add the clips to a new Bin.
