Silverstack Lab has a powerful transcoding engine that can render your OCF clips using common codecs such as Avid DNxHD/HR, Apple ProRes, H264 (AVC), H265 (HEVC) and containers like Quicktime, MXF, and MP4. Utilizing the workflow concept, it becomes even more powerful since clips can be transcoded as soon as they are offloaded. And the option to use Silverstack’s preconfigured presets or create a custom preset on your own is the icing on the cake.

1. Get to know Silverstack’s transcoding workflow#

When creating transcodes in Silverstack Lab, you will use three main user interfaces. The first important one is the transcoding preset panel which allows you to create and adjust transcoding presets. Then, presets can be applied to clips using the workflow configuration window that executes transcoding workflows. After having started transcoding workflows, they can be managed via the jobs view. By default, Silverstack registers all transcoded clips in the library outline into a folder called “Transcoded Clips” which allows copying metadata from the OCF clips to the transcodes.

2. Learn how to configure presets#

If you got familiar with the transcoding pipeline in Silverstack, you can dive deeper into the various options of the transcoding preset panel. When delivering transcodes for editorial, you may find the metadata export feature useful since it allows to automatically create metadata sidecar files after transcoding, specifically needed by NLE applications.

3. Advanced features#

The combined clip feature allows you to combine multiple clips into one big transcode which can be useful for previews, overviews or archives. The article about transcoding workflows explains this in detail.
