Annotating clips with in/out ranges and markers
Reeltime allows annotating segments or specific frames in recordings using in/out ranges and markers. These annotations can include ratings and notes and help identify relevant actions, continuity issues, or QC observations.
Annotated ranges and markers can be searched in the clip library to quickly locate the corresponding segments or frame positions.
1. In/out ranges and markers#
In/out ranges and markers serve different purposes when annotating recordings.

2. Setting in/out ranges#
In/out ranges can be created during recording or playback to mark relevant sections within a take.
Typical workflow:
- set one range for each action within a take
- review the ranges during playback
- use looping to repeat a specific range
In/out ranges support the following operations:
- creating multiple ranges during recording or playback
- enabling ranges playback mode to play only marked ranges
- combining ranges playback with looping
- editing in and out points during playback
- adding ratings and notes to each range
3. Setting markers#
Markers allow annotating a frame position or segment for reference or QC purposes.
Markers can be created:
- during recording
- during playback
- for individual clips
- for all clips in a group recording
Markers support the following features:
- eight marker colors
- customizable marker types in the library settings
- ratings and notes for each marker
Markers can also be created as marker ranges by defining both an in-point and an out-point.
Thumbnail frame marker#
The thumbnail frame is a special marker used to define the representative frame of a clip in the clip library. By default, the thumbnail frame is set to the middle of the clip.
The thumbnail frame can be set for an individual recording or for all clips in a group recording.
4. Inspecting and editing annotations#
All in/out ranges and markers of the current recording can be inspected in a dedicated list view.
This view allows:
- inspecting all annotations of the selected clip
- editing notes and ratings
- navigating directly to annotated positions

5. Finding annotated segments in the clip library#
The clip library search includes marker and in/out range annotations.
When searching for text, the clip library scans:
- clip metadata
- marker annotations
- in/out range annotations
Matching annotations appear in the clip’s detail view, also called the Info tab. An arrow button next to the annotation entry allows loading the clip directly at the annotated frame or range.
