Troubleshoot re-connecting of Blackmagic video I/O devices
Best practice for re-plugging Blackmagic devices#
Due to a Blackmagic background process that does not terminate properly when disconnecting Blackmagic devices, special care must be taken when connecting or disconnecting Blackmagic devices to the computer.
If you want to detach a Blackmagic device from your computer, e.g. to switch from one setup to another setup, please follow the steps below:
- Close Livegrade
- Detach the device
- Attach the device again
- Start Livegrade again
Device was disconnected while Livegrade was running#
When a Blackmagic video I/O device was disconnected or lost power temporarily while Livegrade is open, the affected input and/or output slots will display a ”No Image Source” placeholder image.
If the device did not automatically resume receiving and/or sending the video signals after re-connecting, and still shows the ”No Image Source” placeholder image or a black video image, a Blackmagic background process did not restart successfully.
Follow the steps below to manually restart this background process to continue receiving and sending signals with the device:
- Close Livegrade
- Ensure the device is connected to the computer and has power
- To restart that process manually, open the Activity Monitor application and search for “blackmagic”
- Select all processes named “com.blackmagic-design.BlackmagiclO.DExt”, press the “X” button in the toolbar, and proceed with “Force Quit”
- The process(es) will be quit but will re-appear immediately
- Restart Livegrade
- Inputs and outputs should resume receiving and/or sending the video signals in Livegrade as intended
