Regrading shots

Livegrade includes efficient tools for managing saved looks, facilitating both precise dailies grading and ongoing look adjustments during the filmmaking process.

In this article, we will cover those tools in order to get you familiar with them.

Using the “Update” action#

The simplest way to update the look of a shot is to use the “Update Selected Shot(s) with Current Look” action. This action overwrites the look of all currently selected shots in the library with the current look of the selected slot.

It can be triggered

  • via toolbar button “Update Selected Shot(s) with Current Look”
  • via Stream Deck action “Update Selected Shot(s) with Current Look”
  • via Tangent controller action “Update Selected Shot(s) with Current Look”

Using the playback mode of the source slot#

Each input slot comes with a “Live” and a “Playback” mode. The “Playback” mode can be used to review a clip or a still and also to adjust the look stored with the shot. This can be especially useful for quick changes to a take that was just shot.

To do so, please follow the steps below:

  1. Load shot into source slot: Double-click on a shot to load it back into the slot where it was created from, the so-called “source slot”. If the shot was created as a group, all shots of the group will be loaded into their source slots.
  2. Adjust the look: Use the grade controls to adjust the look
  3. Save or discard: When you are happy with your changes, press the “Save” button or CMD+S to save a shot, or use “Discard Changes of Loaded Shot” to recover the look from the library.

Using the multi-view and temporary slots#

When using multi-view modes “Current Library Shots” or “Custom” to quickly check the look consistency of several shots, Livegrade will dynamically create temporary slots to access each individual shot, which is currently displayed in the viewer.

As long as the selection of the multi-view does not change, the temporary slots will be available – also when switching to single mode. The temporary slots can therefore be used as a workbench for regrading an entire scene shot-by-shot.

To do so, please follow the steps below:

  1. Load several shots into temporary slots via the multi-view: Switch to multi-view mode “Current Library Shots” to load all currently listed shots, or manually add shots via Right-click > “Add to Multi-View” to create a “Custom” multi-view.
  2. Adjust the look: Select the shot you want to adjust by selecting the corresponding temporary slot, and use the grade controls as needed.
  3. Save or discard: When you are happy with your changes, press the “Save All” button or OPT+CMD+S to save all loaded shots, or use “Discard Changes of All Loaded Shots” to recover all looks from the library.

  • Apply preset to selected shots: Create a node preset containing an adjustment and apply it to multiple selected shots in the library.
