Linking nodes to grade multiple cameras and shots

In order to grade multiple live signals at once or to apply a color correction to multiple shots, you can link nodes with the same name and type between slots.

This makes it possible to

  • Establish constant links for your input slots, e.g., by linking a CDL node to always grade the look for all live signals cameras at once
  • Create temporary links for temporary slots to make quick adjustments during re-grading shots of your library, e.g., by linking a CDL node to warm up a whole scene at once

In this article, you will get

  • An introduction to important UI elements when linking slots and shots
  • a detailed description of available actions to work with links.

Node list and slots#

Let’s take a look at the node list and at the slots to spot important areas when linking nodes.

  • Quick link button: links/unlinks the selected node to all slots of the same slot type, e.g., to quickly link/unlink all input slots.
  • Active link: To create a specific link, right-click on a node and select the type of link you want to create. A chain symbol indicates that a node is linked. If the chain icon is greyed out, this means that the link is currently disabled. To enable/disable a link, use the menu item Look > [Toggle Enable/Disable Link] or the corresponding StreamDeck action
  • Selected slot: The currently selected slot is highlighted in light blue.
  • Affected slot: A slot that will be affected by adjustments in the selected node will be highlighted in dark blue.
Tip: Set up and use your node list wisely and be prepared for color adjustments that only apply to a single camera, and color adjustments that should be applied to multiple cameras at once. One best practice is to use a “Balance” node only for individual camera adjustments, e.g., for matching camera A with B, and a “Look” node for adjusting the color for multiple cameras at once.

Grade multiple cameras#

To simultaneously grade multiple camera signals at once, you can link nodes of your input slots.

To do so, select the node you want to link. Then you can choose between two ways:

  • Quick link: Use the quick link button at the top of the node list to link all input slots for adjustments that should apply to all cameras
  • Detailed link: Use the detailed linking actions, which can be accessed via the contextual menu of a node, for adjustments that should only apply to specific slots
Tip: Input slots offer a playback mode, which allows you to load recorded shots back into your source slots. This mechanism is also very useful for re-grading the last take, especially because the links on input slots you’ve set up for your live signals will remain in playback mode.

The quick link action covers the most common use case, where all cameras should be linked and corrections should be applied to all cameras at once.

However, there is a slight difference depending on the type of node you are about to quick-link:

  • When quick-linking a** CDL or Saturation** node, established links will always be “relative”. That means that grading adjustments will be added to existing adjustments in the individual nodes.

  • When quick-linking a curve or LUT node, established links will always “overwrite”. That means that all linked nodes will be overwritten with the values in the selected node.

The detailed linking options can be accessed via the contextual menu of a node. They cover more specific use cases, where simultaneous adjustments should only happen on certain cameras, for example, when working on a mixed camera setup.

To open the detailed linking options, right-click on a node to open the contextual menu.

The following options will appear, which are also accessible via controller actions:

  • **Link (Relative)**Relative links will mathematically add adjustments in the grading to the existing grades in other nodes. Relative links are only possible for CDL and Saturation nodes.
    • [All Input Slots] links the selected node between all input slots
    • **[With Specific Slot]**links the selected node between certain slots (e.g. Slot A and B but not with C)
  • **Link (Overwrite)**Absolute links will overwrite existing grades in the other nodes.
    • **[All Input Slots]**links the selected node between all input slots
    • **[With Specific Slot]**links the selected node between certain slots

Grade multiple shots#

To grade multiple shots of your library, like an entire scene or a shot-size, add the shots you want to adjust into the multi-view, for example, by using the multi-view mode “Current Library Shots”.

To access and regrade each tile shown in the multi-view, temporary slots will be created. They are accessible via the temporary slot list on the left side of the slot’s bar.

Good to know: As temporary slots are also available in single view, you can always change between single- and multi-view modes, re-grading shots.

Keep in mind: Temporary slots will always be dynamically created, depending on what is currently loaded in the output’s multi-view. As long as the multi-view of the output does not change, the temporary slots will stay. When re-configuring the multi-view, for example, when changing the smart group to another scene, temporary slots will be regenerated. Unsaved changes will be lost.

By choosing a certain temporary slot, you will be able to adjust the shot’s look and also adjust its playhead position if the shot is a clip recording. Using the single view’s reference wipe options or the multi-view can help with matching shots to each other.

Save or discard changes#

After finishing your adjustments, press the “Save” button to update an individual shot or the “Save All” button to update the looks of all loaded shots.

If you are not happy with your adjustments, use the “Discard Changes” action to recover the looks from the shot library.

Grade multiple shots at once#

If you need to make an adjustment for several shots at once, you can use the linking mechanism, which works for temporary slots just the same way as for input slots.

Select the node you want to link and choose between two ways:

  • Quick link: Use the quick link button at the top of the node list to link all temporary slots for adjustments that should apply to all shots at once
  • Detailed link: Use the detailed linking actions, which can be accessed via the contextual menu of a node, for adjustments that should only apply to specific shots

The quick link action covers the quickest way to adjust a bunch of shots.

As with linking input slots, there is a slight difference depending on the type of node you are about to quick-link:

  • When quick-linking a** CDL or Saturation** node, established links will always be “relative”. That means that grading adjustments will be added to existing adjustments in the individual nodes.

  • When quick-linking a curve or LUT node, established links will always “overwrite”. That means that all linked nodes will be overwritten with the values in the selected node.

The detailed linking options can be accessed via the contextual menu of a node. They cover more specific use cases, where simultaneous adjustments should only happen on certain slots.

To link a node of a temporary slot, right-click on the node and select one of the following options.

  • **Link (Relative)**Relative links will mathematically add adjustments in the grading to the existing grades in other nodes. Relative links are only possible for CDL and Saturation nodes.
    • **[All Temporary Slots]**links the selected node between all temporary slots shown in the current output
    • **[With Specific Slot]**links the selected node between certain slots (e.g. all Shots from Camera B)
  • **Link (Overwrite)**Absolute links will overwrite existing grades in the other nodes.
    • **[All Temporary Slots]**links the selected node between all temporary slots shown in the current output
    • **[With Specific Slot]**links the selected node between certain slots (e.g. all Shots from Camera B)
Tip: Use Shift+Click to quickly link the currently selected node with nodes with the same name in other slots. CDL and Saturation nodes will then be linked relatively. All other nodes will be linked absolutely.

Applying looks and presets to linked nodes#

If you apply the look from a shot or a look preset to a slot, linked nodes in other slots will be

  • overwritten, if a Link (Overwrite) is active and
  • stay untouched, if a Link (Relative) is active
